Navigating the California CCW application process can be complex and confusing. In large metropolitan areas—such as the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles—applicants often face stricter requirements, including psychological evaluations and extensive background checks. In these areas, it can take up to a year to receive your initial permit.

In contrast, rural counties generally offer a faster and more straightforward process, with fewer requirements. However, regardless of where you apply, you must provide a written attestation stating that you will visit the city or county you're applying through at least once during the two-year term of your permit.
